melissa hullman: teaching philosophy

Love of music and musical excellence go hand in hand.  The more we love music and experience the ways in which it can open up new worlds to us, the more we want to excel (develop our skills, aka practice!); and the more we develop our skills, the more our love of music deepens.  My role is to assist the student in discovering and/or deepening their love of music, and to guide them in developing musical excellence through engaged learning on all levels: intellectual, physical, and musical.  To ensure that these aspects are developed in a balanced way, I use a flexible, student-centered approach that encourages students to develop their musical voice through proper technique, musicianship skills (including music history, theory, and ear training), an understanding of the rich history of the violin and viola traditions, a supportive studio environment, and performance opportunities both inside and outside the studio.
